The Metropolitan Museum of Art | New York

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, also called The Met, is the largest museum in New York. As France has the Louvre and St. Petersburg the Hermitage, so has New York The Met. Metropolitan Museum of Art has a very wide collection. From shards from ancient Egypt, harnesses from the age of knights in Europe, fashion, photography to very modern art: there is something for everyone.

What can you see in The Metropolitan in 1.5 hours?

You should actually spend a few days to do justice to the fantastic collection. Het Met has two million art pieces from 400 galleries around the world with a time span of 5,000 years. If you do not have that much time, then it is advisable to look in the free brochure while waiting in line for the cloakroom to see what you want to visit. We keep the numbers and the description from the folder for convenience.

If you want to discover the museum yourself, you could first go and see the old European Paintings from the Golden Age in rooms 600-632 on the 2nd floor. Many Dutch masters such as Rembrandt, Van Ruysdael and Hobbema hang here. A very special collection.

Then you can go through a complicated corridor to the South side, to the halls 800-830, 19th- and Early 20th Century European Paitings and Sculpture. Here, among other things, there are a few beautiful Van Gogh’s that you really should not miss. Furthermore, very beautiful paintings by Matisse and Degas.

Then you walk on to room 917, Modern and Contemporary Art. Modern, surprising art, a very varied, stimulating collection. You will automatically reach a staircase that leads you to the 1st floor where it goes on for a while and where you will meet beautiful Edward Hoppers.

Now you have earned a drink! From May to October you go to the Roof Garden Cafe on the fifth floor. Sometimes with live jazz, look for it on the website.

Sunday – Thursday 9.30 am – 5.30 pm
Friday and Saturday 10.00 – 21.00
Location: 1000 Fifth Avenue (at 82nd Street). To get there you can take the green metro lines 4, 5 and 6 or the yellow line Q to 86 St.. From there you can walk to the museum, about 10-15 minutes, or change to bus M86 to Fifth Avenue. Switching from the subway on the bus is free, so you pay nothing extra for the use of the bus.

!!! From 1 March, the ‘pay as you wish’ price for non-New Yorkers no longer applies, every visitor has to buy a ticket.

Tip:
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has two other branches, namely The Met Breuer and The Met Cloisters. The Met Breuer is a museum of modern and contemporary art, within walking distance of The Met. The Met Cloisters was built in the style of a Medieval European monastery and is located in the northern tip of Manhattan. With your tickets for The Met you also get access to these two museums, so plan your time carefully!
