The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York is the only museum where visitors can admire a legendary aircraft carrier, the first space shuttle, the fastest planes and a submarine from the Cold War. The museum is very popular and welcomes no fewer than one million visitors a year. The Intrepid Museum is located in and on the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid. The ship was active in the fight against the Japanese during the Second World War in the Pacific Ocean. In addition, the Intrepid played an important role as an aircraft carrier during the Vietnam War.
What can you expect from the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum?
Since 1982, the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid serves as a museum. By visiting the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, you get an excellent view of sea, air and space innovation over the years. In order to be able to experience these innovations in real life, the museum has, among other things, a Space Shuttle Pavilion where the first spacecraft in the world, the Enterprise.
Airplanes and submarines
In the museum there is an exhibition of 27 old aircraft, such as the fastest military aircraft and a spy plane. Also the fastest commercial aircraft in the world, the British Airways Concorde can be seen on the Intrepid. It is also very interesting to take a look at the submarine (USS Growler). Keep in mind that there is often a queue here.
You can use the audio tour and there are guides who will gladly tell you more about the history of the USS Intrepid. This way you can view the bridge with the wheelhouse of the ship and you can learn more about how the crew and equipment worked during wars. The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum is very suitable for children. The map shows exactly what there is to do for children, so there is something for everyone!
In addition to all planes, there are also three simulators in the Intrepid Museum. All three offer a different experience. There is the 4D movie ‘Stories of Intrepid’: unique historical images combined with modern computer graphics ensure that you can experience the stories of the pilots. In the moving simulator ‘G-Force Encounter’ you sit in a double cockpit and you control your own plane. In ‘Transporter FX’ you step into a capsule to experience a flight with special effects. The capsule moves like a real plane and you feel the wind in your hair.
This museum is very nice for plane lovers and children. The aircraft carrier itself is already very interesting to see inside, but the outside is certainly impressive too. For example, walk to the pier of 42nd Street and take some photos from there. My visit to the museum lasted about ninety minutes.
