MoMA Museum of Modern Art in New York is a must-visit for all fans of modern art. It is one of the great museums for modern art in North America. There is a spectacular permanent collection and there are many different exhibitions.
MoMa will be closed from 15 June to 21 October 2019
The Museum of Modern Art announced that it will close its doors from June 15 to October 21 in order to rehang its collections and redefine the experience in its galleries both old and new at the tail end of the institution’s $400 million expansion.
The tickets that you can purchase here ensure a comfortable visit, because you can skip the line. You can also visit MoMA PS1 in Long Island City with the same ticket up to fourteen days later.
What can you see in 1.5 hours of MoMA?
First check if there is an exhibition that you necessarily want to see. On the 6th floor (top floor) there are always one or two of their most important exhibitions, these are often really worthwhile! If not, take the escalator at the entrance. Keep taking the escalators until you are on the fifth floor – you will get a little feeling at the building. Then enjoy the masterpieces of the greats: Cézanne, Van Gogh, Picasso etc. Then you go down a staircase and the permanent collection continues. Pollock, Warhol, Rotkho. Really pretty.
Then go down a ladder for some lighter entertainment. The MoMA has an excellent design department on the third floor, the Architecture is also on this floor and is definitely worth it. Do you have time left? Choose an exhibition, or if you are tired you can grab a movie. On each floor there are very nice people at the information points, who are happy to help you find something nice.
Tips for your visit
In the summer, afterwards, you can enjoy a drink outside in the Sculpture Garden. Very restful. In the winter you can try it at one of the cafes in the neighborhood, these are often full (and are also very pricey). It gets very busy during the day. If you can plan it like that, go in the morning half an hour after the opening (before the opening it is very busy), then it usually falls. Upon arrival there is immediately a row for the (free) cloakroom (wardrobe). All bags (except handbags) must be checked in, including plastic bags. So it might be convenient to go shopping after the museum visit.
A free audio tour is available for every visitor. You know, such a portable device where you enter a code and then you get a story
Shopping in MoMA
MoMA has a large store in the building itself, but also one on the other side of the museum, there are more furniture and crockery. There is also a store in SoHo (81 Spring Street).
