Washington DC is the capital of the United States of America. Also known as the city of icons such as the White House and the Capitol. It is the city where you can admire the American Declaration of Independence, visit presidential memorial sites and take a look at the buildings where the country is governed.
The most interesting part of the city lies at the ‘National Mall’. In this park full of museums, monuments and water features, the prominent buildings of the city are centered together.
The “D.C.”, which you often see behind Washington, stands for “District of Columbia”. This is the federal district in which the capital belongs. The District of Columbia is named after an old name for the US: Columbia (again derived from Columbus).
The White House
Who does not know the White House? One of the most famous buildings in the world is in Washington D.C., and you can not ignore that during a visit to the city. The spacious official residence of the president consists of 132 rooms spread over 6 floors. In addition to offices and living quarters, there is also a cinema room, a swimming pool and a basketball court, and the complex is surrounded by a huge garden. You can find the bright white house on Pennsylvania Avenue, unfortunately it is not possible to get very close, but the view from the entrance gate is impressive enough.
Near the White House is another American icon: The US Capitol, or The Capitol. In this gigantic structure, with a beautiful white dome, is the place where the American legislature sits. Through the underground visitor center you can enter the building and view the enormous dome from the inside. The colossus has a diameter of no less than 30 meters, and is decorated with a fresco on which, among others, the Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant can be seen.
The Capitol Visitor Center welcomes visitors from across the United States and around the world. Identification is not required to enter the Capitol or to enjoy a tour.
